Environmental scan of mental health programs in the US Universities
Theoretical Background and research questions/hypothesis: There is an urgent need to address college students' mental well-being. Research shows that college students are at high risk of developing mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. The transition to college life, academic stress, social pressures, and financial difficulties can all contribute to the onset or exacerbation of mental health issues. However, after COVID-19, some universities have increasingly recognized the importance of addressing students’ well-being with new and innovative approaches. This study conducted an environmental scan of the universities’ across the United States to understand the approach employed in addressing students' mental health and well-being.
Methods: We conducted a scan of 50 US universities’ websites to examine what type of strategies have been employed by universities in addressing students’ mental well-being. One university from each state with the highest student enrollment was selected for the analysis. All strategies were recorded and thematically analyzed.
Results: Preliminary analysis from the scan revealed that various strategies such as counseling and mental health services, mental health education and awareness, support for students in crisis, and peer support programs are in place to provide support and resources to those who may be struggling. Further, some universities offer text-based interventions, encourage life-study balance, and provide referral resources. Several universities also provide suicide prevention resources.
Conclusions: We found that the mental well-being of students are addressed by most of the universities; however, it is possible that universities may not have included all the program details provided by the university in the website.
Implications for research and/or practice: The practical implication of the scan helps identify the strategies that positively impact students such as improved academic performance, student retention, campus culture, and improved health outcomes.
