Spotlight Session: Voices, Reactions and Experiences: Making the Case for the Lived Experience in Public Health, Sponsored by CDC's National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD)

Thursday, July 20, 2023: 1:30 PM-3:00 PM
Sponsored by CDC's National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD)

Approximately 1 in 4 adults in the United States has some type of disability. The term ‘disability’ is broad in scope to include various types of disabilities (e.g., mobility, cognitive, or vision) that can occur at any moment during one’s life. Our moderated panel of public health leaders, disability advocates, and trusted partners will examine the importance of applying the lived experiences of people with disabilities in public health plans, strategies, and communication efforts. During this special session, panelists will also discuss how public health professionals can apply lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic to improve the health and safety of individuals living with disabilities during times of both emergencies and non-emergencies. The best practices and possible solutions shared will assist public health leaders and communicators at the federal, state, and local levels to better understand and address the health and information needs of people with disabilities.
