Lessons Learned Communicating with Frontline Healthcare Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Wednesday, July 19, 2023: 4:00 PM-5:30 PM
Centennial Ballroom I (Hyatt Regency Downtown Atlanta)
Healthcare workers (HCWs) served on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic, caring for and informing patients about infection control actions to prevent spread of COVID-19. It is common for HCWs to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations but doing so in a public health emergency while guidance was evolving was challenging. Frontline HCWs, including those in long-term care and dialysis settings, interact with residents and patients on a frequent basis and continue to provide routine care throughout the pandemic. It was essential for CDC to provide clear and concise infection control information for these HCWs to safely care for and educate their residents and patients. This panel will describe risk communication principles, several CDC communication activities during the COVID-19 response, and the lessons learned communicating to HCWs on the frontlines. Attendees will be able to apply these practices in future emergency and non-emergency communications work.
